It seems like small knives get respect equivalent to their size, very little. Most people wouldn’t look at a subcompact lightweight car and think “high-performance vehicle”. That first estimation could change when it’s revealed that clown car is disproportionately packing 350 horsepower and a high-speed racing package. Another example of stature not accurately representing ability is a Spyderco Dragonfly. Its cutting ability is unequal to its diminutive package and innocuous name. It kicks off with premium components like VG-10 blade steel and a G-10 foliage green handle. The VG-10 is tooled into a full flat-grind 2-1/4” long blade with a spine cusp jutting out the top where the thumb naturally settles itself for control over the cutting edge. The G-10 handle is ergonomically blueprinted so when held and used the knife feels and performs like a larger tool. Even the positioning of the Spyderco Round Opening Hole in relation to the pivot is tweaked for smooth opening and hitting all the correct pressure points in the hand. Blade and handle geometry create a series of grip angles with a purposeful flat shelf at the base where the pinkie finger rides as a leverage point. Wire clip carries right or left-handed tip-up or use it as a money clip.

If you already own a Delica or Endura, you have one of the best selling knives Spyderco makes. The knife you have just acquired is a bit different from the normal C10 Endura4 and C11 Delica4 Lightweights. They are now available in a range of new handle colors with full-flat ground blades. Their FRN (fiberglass reinforced nylon) handles come in new vibrant tones including blue, green, brown, gray and purple. Molded onto the handle's surface is Bi-Directional Texturing® for slip-free tactile traction. Inside the handle are dual skeletonized stainless steel liners which strengthen the knife without additional weight and double as an anchor for external and internal components to attach through generating more sturdiness and rigidity. The blades are full flat-ground VG-10 with a thinner highly refined cutting edge and a larger 13mm opening hole. Added to the blade’s spine is slip resistant jimping. Phosphor bronze washers smooth out the open/close action and the clip is upgraded to a four-way tip-up, tip-down, left-or right-handed clip.

Fred Perrin is a custom knifemaker, a former French Army Commando and a world-renowned martial artist. His Street Beat fixed-blade knife reflects all these influences. Ground from VG-10 stainless steel, it featues full-tang construction for strength and a deep finger choil halfway along its length. The finger choil not only provides a solid handguard to protect the user's hand, it also precisely defines the balance point of the knife for deft, responsive handling. The handle is constructed of polished Micarta handle scales that are contoured to fit the hand and double pinned for secure attachment. The full-flat-ground blade provides excellent edge geometry and cutting performance, and an unsharpened swedge on the spine ensures a strong but capable point. The Street Beat includes two lanyard holes--one at the butt end of the handle and one through the blade near the balance point--and comes complete with a black Boltaron (Kydex) sheath with a versatile G-Clip attachment that provides a variety of different carry options.

Spyderco has several knife designs that remain steadfast year after year.  What keeps people buying them over decades is their basic function but also that they’re upgraded or refreshed with new technology and materials when they become available.  A prolific design in Spyderco’s line is the Calypso. Its arrival over a decade ago as a mid-sized folder has spawned numerous variations and converted legions of knife buyers to the benefits of flat-ground, thick leaf-shaped blades.  This is a workingman’s or woman’s folder founded on the premise that a comfortable, usable pocketknife is one that feels like a natural extension of your hand. A larger, newer Bionic version of the original Calypso Jr. is the Caly3.5.  The latest Calypso progeny has a three and a half inch VG-10 leaf-shaped blade that is thick at the tang, then tapering to a tip.  The cutting edge is flat-ground and thin for precision and receptive cutting. Ergonomics and control were taken into the designs’ consideration and where handle and blade meet is a substantial finger choil.  This is the spot where the index finger settles ergonomically leading the thumb to naturally position itself directly above on the blade’s spine.  Also the spine is textured with slip resistant jimping making the knife feels like part of the hand with no sliding forward or backward while cutting.  The black G-10 handle has a mid-positioned back lock and a low profile wire clip, holding the folder deeply in a pocket facing tip-up.

First introduced in 1990, the Spyderco Delica was one of the first lightweight, high-performance, one-hand-open pocketknives ever developed. A consistent best seller, it has evolved steadily over the years through Spyderco's CQI (Constant Quality Improvement) process. The Delica 4 features enhanced ergonomics, screw-together construction, and a four-position clip for versatile carry options. Its fiberglass reinforced nylon handles are molded with Bi-Directional Texturing for improved traction and control and are supported by dual skeletonized stainless steel liners. The liners increase structural strength without adding weight and provide a framework to anchor all external and internal components. Its VG-10 blade is flat saber-ground with a stronger tip and larger 13mm opening hole. This version is also black titanium carbonitride coated to reduce reflection and provide increased corrosion resistance. Phosphor bronze washers ensure a smooth action, and textured jimping on the spine guarantees positive control during use.

  • Black, titanium carbonitride-coated blade for low profile and extreme corrosion resistance
  • Flat-ground VG-10 high-carbon stainless steel blade with a partially serrated
  • Mid-positioned back lock with David Boye Dent locks blade securely open and prevents accidental closure
  • Skeletonized stainless steel liners support injection-molded fiberglass-reinforced nylon handle scales
  • Four-position pocket clip supports tip-up/tip-down, left or right-side carry

Spyderco Ladybug Key Ring Knife Review

!±8± Spyderco Ladybug Key Ring Knife Review

We've all seen the buckets of key ring knives for sale at the cigar or liquor store that cost under .00 a piece. The problem with these "bargains" is that they have almost no lock strength, cheap handles and poorly made blades. Spyderco takes the idea of a practical key ring knife and puts their own high quality spin on it.

Here are my thoughts on the Spyderco Ladybug.

What I like about the knife:

1. VG-10 is a high quality stainless steel, which is most commonly seen in knives that range from and up. It not only holds a great edge but has the same rust and corrosion resistance that you would expect from stainless steel.

2. It seems that knife companies are constantly making their products larger and larger. In doing so, their smaller and more practical designs are being dropped from the lineups. The Spyderco Ladybug has a blade length of 1.94 inches, making it legal to carry with you and large enough to be a helpful tool.

3. Spyderco's time proven lock back mechanism does a great job of protecting your fingers. The last thing that you want to worry about with a sharp VG-10 blade is lock failure.

4. For the handle, you get the option of black zytel, orange or black FRN material or stainless steel. I went with the black zytel version because I've had positive experiences with it before. Each material should be fine, it just comes down to a matter of personal preference.

5. You also get the option between plain and serrated edge styles. The serrations seem to come in handy for opening boxes, or cutting through fibrous material. The plain edge version can be easier to sharpen though.

What I didn't like:

The only critique I have is that the handle could be designed a little bit more comfortably. While each handle style is durable enough to last a long time, I think the finger choils could be slightly repositioned.

Overall:

With suggested retail values ranging from .95 to .95, the Spyderco Ladybug is not your average key ring knife. The high quality steel, fantastic lock strength and rugged handle makes this knife a trusted companion for years to come. Spend the extra money and go with the Spydero Ladybug. Your fingers will thank you!
